Kindle PDF Conversion – How to Convert PDF’s For the Amazon Kindle

Travis Van Slooten asked:

With the release of the Kindle DX, Amazon finally gave an answer for the Kindle PDF queries that flooded the internet. With the Kindle 2, there is no native PDF file support. Try to load a PDF and you get nothing. Amazon’s first solution was to offer file conversion for a minimal fee. You simply send them your PDF and they will convert it to run on your Kindle. However, this led to many people wondering why they should pay to have every PDF converted. There had to be a way to do it yourself. Turns out that there is a way, but it still isn’t perfect.

First, you have to understand what files the Kindle will recognize. While PDF is not one of them, it does recognize PRC files. There are programs out there such as Mobipocket Creator for the PC and Stanza for the Mac that will allow you to convert PDFs into PRC files that the Kindle can recognize. Whichever you have to use, the process is essentially the same and you will still end up with the same file type.

For the PC, the full version of Mobipocket Creator makes the conversion fairly straightforward. Simply open the program and go to the import file option. Select your PDF that you wish to convert for use on your Kindle. Select the HTML file it creates and click the build option. It may take some time depending on the size of the PDF, but it will eventually give you the file format you need. You can ignore any errors that pop up along the conversion process. While the file will not be perfect, it lacks a table of contents for instance, you will still be able to view a legible version of it on your Kindle. The process is even simpler in Stanza. You simply pick the file, then choose export book as option. Amazon Kindle is one of the options listed.

You should note that these file conversions are not always perfect. As stated earlier, you will not get a table of contents standard with the conversion. The program comes with the option to create one, however. If your PDF is large or you need it to be properly organized, it might be worth your time to build a table of contents yourself. You may also experience some clunky conversion sectors, but they shouldn’t make the document illegible. If everything goes smoothly, you should end up with a readable Kindle PDF document.

There is always the option of e-mailing your documents in to have them converted, but it can be expensive over time and takes a while for the document to get back to you. If you’re more interested in doing it yourself, these are just two programs that have the ability to convert the files. There may be other programs, even better programs, but you will have to do some searching to find the one you like the most. If you are just looking for a Kindle PDF conversion, these programs make it easy enough for anyone to handle.

Where to Buy Kindle – Amazon’s Next Generation Wireless Reading Device

I love the fact that the Kindle is crowded with the latest technology of a laptop; however, one third its’ size. It functions, seeks and downloads wireless over a 3G network (similar to the network used for cell phones). Thus getting rid of the unwieldy USB cords and mad searches to detect a WIFI hot spot.
